Yet another Global Warming study is warning us of impending doom if we don't bow before the goddess, Kyoto. According to the AFP story, the study says (emphasis mine):

An extraordinary burst of global warming that occurred around 55 million years ago dramatically reversed Earth's pattern of ocean currents . . .

The article goes on to explain why they think this 55 million year old event is on the verge of recurring and why that's a bad thing. What they don't explain is what evidence they have that there is anything we can do to stop it. If a global warming event occured 55 million years ago - long before we were a twinkle in Piltdown man's forged eye - why should we believe that the current warming is anything other than a geological cycle over which we have little or no control? Does it make any sense to spend trillions of dollars, bankrupt nations and let the poor starve just to perform some leftist rite of absolution? Oh, yeah. I forgot. It doesn't matter as long as you are really, really sincere.

On December 29, 2005, NPR reported that the San Bernardino California Diocese has put Father Ned Reidy on trial on charges of heresy.

"Reidy left the Roman Catholic church in 1999 to join the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, a denomination that now boasts more than a dozen parishes nationwide. While Catholic in name, it splits with the Vatican over some fundamental church doctrines. Unlike heretics of old, Reidy does not openly rail against Roman Catholic teachings with which he disagrees. He says he just offers an alternative . . . Reidy is also charged with schism, which is defined as a failure to submit to the authority of the pope or of church leaders. Reidy doesn't deny the charges. But he says the diocese no longer has jurisdiction over him. If found guilty, Reidy would be formally defrocked and ex-communicated from the Roman Catholic Church."

In my opinion, one of the problems with the Christian church in America is that this doesn't happen often enough. This is especially true when it comes to Protestant churches. The result has been a blurring of the line between what is orthodox and what is not - a theological relativism. Relativism is as incompatible with theology as it is with itself.

Sometimes you just have to call a heretic a heretic.

I was passing through a small Southern town and saw a Nativity Scene in the town square. I was delighted to see that great skill and talent had gone into creating it.

One small feature bothered me.

The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets.

I was completely at a loss to explain it, so I left. But I found a "Quick Stop" on the edge of town, so I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets.

She exploded, "You damnYankees never do read the Bible!"

I assured her that I did, but it had been a while since I'd perused the Gospels and simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.

She sniffed and jerked her Bible from behind the counter, ruffled through the pages and finally jabbed her finger at a passage.

She stuck the passage under my nose and said, "See? Plain as day, it says right here, 'The three wise man came from afar.' "

Don't Let the Door Hit You On the Way Out

On Monday, a federal judge resigned from the court that oversees government surveillance in intelligence cases. US District Judge James Robertson gave no reason for his resignation, but that didn't prevent the Washington Post from "finding" a reason:

A federal judge has resigned from the court that oversees government surveillance in intelligence cases in protest of President Bush's secret authorization of a domestic spying program, according to two sources. [ed. - Emphasis mine]

Of course, the "sources" may be correct. Paul Mirengoff of Powerline has his own take on Judge Robertson who may have had a political reason to leave the panel so publicly.

Judge Robertson should be respected for his decision, which appears to have been an act of conscience. However, as the Post acknowledges near the end of its story, Robertson is a liberal judge (very liberal, if my my experience is any indication) who "who has often ruled against the Bush administration's assertions of broad powers in the terrorism fight, most notably in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld."

Doug of Bogus Gold expounds on a 60 Minutes interview with Morgan Freeman. Doug quotes the following from an AP article:

"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history." ...

Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.

ID vs. Ego

Nancy Pearcey has an interesting article in Human Events in which she gives five reasons why Intelligent Design will eventually succeed. I recommend reading it. She starts her article by linking to articles by three normally thoughtful commentators who have been very critical of ID. George Will casually swipes at ID as he would a gnat (or should I say "gadfly"?). The closest he comes to an argument is his response to the idea that evolution is not a fact:

"But it is."

If only George had been at the Scopes Trial . . . On the other hand, Charles Krauthammer and John Derbyshire demonstrate that there are limits to any human being's intelligence by furiously constructing and squashing cliched evolutionist ID-strawmen. It seems to me that neither has bothered to learn anything about Intelligent Design, which is too bad. I would like to have read read some thoughtful criticism of ID by these gentlemen. Boiler plate criticism is beneath them.

My favorite quote regarding the WaPo dynamic duo's attitude toward ID comes from Plato's Stepchild [HT: Mondo]:

[Krauthammer and Will] "have now lashed Intelligent Design to the track, hoping to run it down with their train of thought."

But I'm only a lonely, occaisional blogger. What do I know. Let's see what Father Richard John Neuhaus has to say in response to Will and Krauthammer:

Will and Krauthammer are upset by Pat Robertson, and Pat Robertson is frequently upsetting, but they do not mention the many science textbooks that more or less explicitly state that a scientific account of the origins of life precludes the necessity—some say the possibility—of a Creator. In short, they appear not to be upset that classrooms are being used for propagandizing, in the name of science, an atheistic and materialistic philosophy.

I'm a U2 fan. I have been since the early 1980s. I have nothing against them and don't wish them any ill.

However, when I saw that they had been given a major award by Portugal for 25 years of looking stylish while telling others that they aren't doing enough to stop hunger in Africa, I had to say something. Oh, and what has U2 been doing recently? Spending thousands and thousands of dollars on lawyers so Bono could get his hat back.

Bono said: "This case was brought very reluctantly, in the context of a larger dispute which we never invited. The point of principle involved was of much greater significance to us than any item of memorabilia."

Question: How many starving children in Africa could have been fed for the price of Bono's "principle"?

Lewis' conversion to Christianity. "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics" are Christian classics. If you prefer fiction, the Father Brown mysteries are delightful. Now, to whet your appetite, I have provided a few Chesterton quotes:

Captain Ed over at Captain's Quarters offers his thoughts on an article in the British newspaper, the Independent. The article discusses the impending demise of Mecca and Medina (Tom Tancredo notwithstanding) at the hands of radical Islam. The good Captain observes:

The voracious iconoclasm of Wahhabism and radical Islamists will do what Muslims feared the West wanted in the first place -- the destruction of the Prophet's cities. It won't take long before the Ka'aba stone itself will disappear as well. Once that happens, the Islamists will find themselves surrounded by a whole new class of enemies, enemies from the ranks of moderate Islam whose religion insists that Muslims must make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca in their lifetime.

So if I understand Mr. Butt, the "apparent enemies" are those having a direct influence on the Muslim world (i.e. America, Britain, France, India, China, EU, UN, etc.) Who are the "hidden enemies" then? Mr. Butt names at least some of them when he says he won't start attacking South America. In other words, the "hidden enemies" are the non-Muslim countries which are not supporting America and its allies. President Bush famously said, "You are either with us or you are with the terrorists". The terrorists believe that you are either with them or you are their enemy. There are no neutral countries in their eyes.

The speculation today has been that a female jurist would be named to replace Justice O'Connor. It has been assumed that would be the safe pick. However, the President has just announced John Roberts as his choice. From what I hear, he should be a fine choice and is widely respected on both sides of the aisle.

I think it may be a strategic stroke of genius. If Schumer, Durbin & Company try to block Roberts with a filibuster, it will likely fail. If they accidentally do the smart thing and save the filibuster option for Rehnquist's replacement, the President can then choose a female jurist for Chief Justice which will be impossible for them to filibuster. The majority of the Dems will not want to be seen as blocking the first female Chief Justice. Checkmate.

Elizabeth Fraser, lead singer of the Cocteau Twins needs no introduction. Ms. Fraser has a few MP3s on her site. Just click on the word "Sound" on the left side of the page. Unfortunately, due to download abuse, the Cocteau Twins took down the free MP3s they had on their website.

Sam Phillips - no, not that Sam Phillips, this Sam Phillips - is the wife of T-Bone Burnett. I've been a fan of her music since before she was Sam. Her MP3s are here and also here.

And finally, in my opinion, the best has been saved for last. Karin Bergquist of Over the Rhine is one of my favorite vocalists. She uses her beautifully melancholic voice to wring out every last ounce of emotion from each song. You can find OTRs MP3s here.

The bombs contained about 10Ibs of explosives. This suggests they were not homemade, but had a commercial or military purpose.

The MSM has been saying that the relatively small amount of explosives indicated that they were homemade. I guess they can't be right about everything.

Was London Evented?

One of my major frustrations since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA is the use of the word "events" to describe what happened. It's now beginning to happen with the London attacks which, so far, have resulted in 50 dead and several hundred wounded. Although one can argue it is technically accurate because the murder of 3,000 in the USA or 50+ in London can be generally described as "Something that takes place; an occurrence. . . A significant occurrence or happening. . . A social gathering or activity". Well, the last one might be a stretch, but maybe rescue workers looking for body parts at Ground Zero or in London's Underground could be considered a social activity.

The problem with describing America's 9/11 or London's 7/7 as "events" is that it strips them of any moral context. It would be like describing the Nazi death camps as temporary communal housing facilities - technically true but it ignores what the Nazis did to millions of innocents. (If you don't like Nazi analogies: it would be like calling drug smuggling an import/export business.) Likewise, calling these terrorist attacks "events" puts them in the same catagory as a family reunion, a football game or an ice cream social. America, Bali, Madrid and London were not "evented". They were attacked. Let's call it what it really is.

Reality Bites: Kiwis May Abandon Kyoto

The New Zealand Herald reports that the Kiwis may be figuring out that Kyoto is not in their best interest . . . to the tune of $1,000,000,000. Yes, that's one billion-with-a-B dollars. Instead of a net $500,000 benefit from Kyoto, they are now expecting a negative impact of $500,000. Isn't it interesting how radical environmentalism is not quite as necessary as when it's only the USA that has to take the economic hit.

I'm reminded of a scene from the Tom Hanks film "Big". Hanks plays a character who is a kid in an adult's body. After getting a job developing toys for a toy company, he comes up with the idea to create a comic book with a chip that allows the reader to determine the story line. It's a brilliant idea, except the cost would be so great that there was no way it would sell. Hanks' immature character was clueless when it came to economics. The same seems to be true of the Left. As Kyoto demonstrates, they have no concept of the economic impact of their policy positions. Those who have to live with the consequences cannot afford to be so naive.

What I Saw On My Way to the Sequel

I recently had some time to go see a movie on "the big screen". It had been a while since my interest in movie-going, my free time and the choices available reached critical mass. My intent was to go see the final installment of the prequel-trilogy of the original Star Wars trilogy. My backup plan was to see Batman Begins. I won't bore you with the details, but Providence had other plans. With both of my choices eliminated, there was only one other movie that interested me. All I have to say is, thank God for Providence!

The movie I saw was Cinderella Man starring Russell "The Telephone Man" Crowe, Renee Zellwegger and Paul Giamatti. If you haven't seen it yet, go see it NOW before it leaves the theatres. Cinderella Man is a boxing movie that's not about boxing. It's about family, honesty, self-sufficiency, hardship, redemption, perseverence, self-sacrifice . . . in other words, good old fashioned American values. Director Ron Howard (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind) has a knack for making great films and this is no exception.

Ok, since I seem to have established a habit of announcing upcoming movies that interest me, here's another one.

A film version of Douglas Adams' comedy sci-fi book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will open on April 29, 2005. Here is a link to the movie's website. If you're interested in the trailers, you can find them here.

The BBC made a video version of the book in 1982. Needless to say, the special effects are dated, but they did a reasonable job on the script. The new film looks as if it has decent special effects. Hopefully, they do an equally decent job with the script this time.

After All This Time

In 1979 I was a high school senior. Vietnam was still an open wound and Jimmy Carter was president. The US Olympic hockey team had not yet won Gold and the Iranian Hostage Crisis was a few months in the future. So what does an 18 year old who is oblivious to the world around him do? I joined the Minnesota Army National Guard for a full 6 year hitch. Sure, I joined to get the signing bonus to help pay for college. However, I never lost sight of the fact that I had joined the military and could be called up for active duty.

After high school graduation, I went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for Basic Training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training). I then returned to Minnesota to serve with the 151st Field Artillery in Montevideo, Minnesota. After a couple years I transferred to the battalion headquarters in Anoka, Minnesota where I finished my 6 year commitment in 1985. I have never regretted the experience. I am also very proud of the professionalism of those with whom I served.

Why do I bring this up now? Well, last year both the Montevideo and Anoka National Guard units I served with were called up to active duty and were shipped over to Iraq. On February 21, 2005 in Iraq, a roadside bomb was detonated killing three soldiers of the 151st Field Artillery in Montevideo. The soldiers, Staff Sgt. David Day, 25, of St. Louis Park, 1st Lt. Jason Timmerman, 25, of Tracy, and Sgt. Jesse Lhotka, 24, of Alexandria were killed while trying to assist a fellow soldiers who were injured in a convoy accident. I pray for those killed and wounded and for their families. I can only imagine grief and loss they are feeling.

I didn't know any of the soldiers who were killed. In fact, I don't believe I know anyone currently serving with the 151st. However, when I heard about these three soldiers being killed, I felt something I did not expect. I've been trying for a couple weeks to figure out what it was that I felt. It wasn't the profound grief of the loss of a loved one. And it wasn't the sadness we, as Americans, feel whenever we hear about an American soldier being killed in the line of duty. It was something else. I think it ws the feeling of the loss of a commrade - or in this case, three commrades. It's been twenty years since I left the Army National Guard. After all this time, it seems, the 151st has not left me.

Being a fan of Blade Runner, Gladiator and Blackhawk Down, I was looking forward to Ridley Scott's new film, Kingdom of Heaven. Then I found this article from the Telegraph. It sounds like we are going to be assaulted again with another Hollywood revision of history. Here are some excerpts:

The £75 million film, which stars Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson, is described by the makers as being "historically accurate" and designed to be "a fascinating history lesson".

So, they made sure to thouroughly research the history of the Crusades, right? Let's find out...

Academics, however - including Professor Jonathan Riley-Smith, Britain's leading authority on the Crusades - attacked the plot of Kingdom of Heaven, describing it as "rubbish", "ridiculous", "complete fiction" and "dangerous to Arab relations..."

...Prof Riley-Smith, who is Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge University, said the plot was "complete and utter nonsense". He said that it relied on the romanticised view of the Crusades propagated by Sir Walter Scott in his book The Talisman, published in 1825 and now discredited by academics.

"It sounds absolute balls. It's rubbish. It's not historically accurate at all. They refer to The Talisman, which depicts the Muslims as sophisticated and civilised, and the Crusaders are all brutes and barbarians. It has nothing to do with reality..."

...Prof Riley-Smith added that Sir Ridley's [Scott] efforts were misguided and pandered to Islamic fundamentalism. "It's Osama bin Laden's version of history. It will fuel the Islamic fundamentalists."

Need another expert opinion? Okay:

Dr Jonathan Philips, a lecturer in history at London University and author of The Fourth Crusade and the Sack of Constantinople, agreed that the film relied on an outdated portrayal of the Crusades and could not be described as "a history lesson".

He said: "The Templars as 'baddies' is only sustainable from the Muslim perspective, and 'baddies' is the wrong way to show it anyway. They are the biggest threat to the Muslims and many end up being killed because their sworn vocation is to defend the Holy Land."

Dr Philips said that by venerating Saladin, who was largely ignored by Arab history until he was reinvented by romantic historians in the 19th century, Sir Ridley [Scott] was following both Saddam Hussein and Hafez Assad, the former Syrian dictator. Both leaders commissioned huge portraits and statues of Saladin, who was actually a Kurd, to bolster Arab Muslim pride.

Need a pro-Muslim opinion? Will a French opinion do?

Amin Maalouf, the French historian and author of The Crusades Through Arab Eyes, said: "It does not do any good to distort history, even if you believe you are distorting it in a good way. Cruelty was not on one side but on all."

Ridley Scott's spokesman, intentionally or not, shares the real purpose of this film:

Sir Ridley's spokesman said that the film portrays the Arabs in a positive light. "It's trying to be fair and we hope that the Muslim world sees the rectification of history."

So, "historically accurate" has nothing to do with reporting history factually; it's about rewriting history to make it "fair". I've got news for you, Ridley. History isn't fair. It is what it is what it is.

Narnia Revisited

Jinx found a BBC article which refers to Harper Collins' plan to rewrite the Chonicles of Narnia in order to remove the Christian message. Although this article is from 2001 and does not refer directly to the film currently in production, it does show that those who hold the publishing rights to the books are open to the idea of eliminating Christ from a story which is an allegory of His life. I wonder if Harper Collins also intends to rewrite "Mere Christianity" in order to reach a wider audience?

Narnia Coming to the Big Screen

C. S. Lewis' classic fantasy "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" is being made into a live action film. The official movie website can be found here. There is also a trailer available here. You will notice that WETA Workshop/WETA Digital is involved in making the movie. WETA did most of the special effects and props in the Lord of the Rings movies. This bodes well for the look and design in the movie. The only question is whether or not the director and screenwriters will ruin the movie by trying to remove the Christian message from this Christian allegory.

The Declaration of Independence and other historical documents from American history have been banned by Patricia Vidmar, the principal of Stevens Creek Elementary School in Cupertino, California. Why have they been banned? The documents contain references to God. Not only that, the teacher who is suing the school district was singled out by the principal because he is a Christian. I suppose if the teacher was an atheist and was using the Declaration as an example of the ignorance and superstitions of the Founding Fathers, Ms. Vidmar would have been very supportive.

One of the great things about blogging and reading other blogs is that you occaisionally come across a diamond in the rough. While reading a previously mentioned link at Shock and Blog, I noticed a comment by, Dan Meyers. I went to View of the Republic and found a young conservative blogger who writes passionately about serious issues.
