In our civilization, and under our republican form of government, intelligence

is so highly honored that it is rewarded by exemption from the cares of office.

Death Row Conversion?

The head honcho of CBS' parent company, Viacom, has come out in support of President Bush's re-election. Sumner Redstone, a self-described liberal Democrat, says that he is supporting the President because the Republican administration's policies will be better for Viacom. That's an amazing statement coming from someone who has supported the Democrat candidate over the last several elections. Apparently he has just recently become interested in Viacom's well-being. In fact, it must be quite recent, since he's donated the $2,000 maximum to the Kerry campaign!

I have no doubt that he believes this move will be good for Viacom - just not for the reasons he has given. I suspect he's hoping that if they go to bed with the sheriff they won't be swinging from the gallows at dawn.

Memo to Sumner: It only works in the movies.
